Since vehicle tracking is not standardised, it is necessary for external telematics hardware units, or dongles, to be provided that can connect to an on-board diagnostics (OBD) port that can also access the global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Vimcar wanted to ensure that each dongle could be securely authenticated so the data from each vehicle is accurate and frauds cannot be committed. In addition, to support the business case, ease of installation and controlled connectivity costs were a key requirement.
