Kickstarting the Industrial Internet of Things

QSC AG, a specialist for Cloud, SAP and IoT services, and TeamViewer, the world’s leading provider of collaboration and remote support solutions, have developed the IIoT Starter Kit, an all-in-one solution for the remote monitoring and condition analysis of machines in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).

The IIot Starter Kit sensor technologiy is based on IO-Link and can read and analyze machine data easily and flexibly. While QSC AG provides the integrated sensor technology as well as the corresponding edge gateway for data transfer, the data will be transmitted in encrypted form via TeamViewer’s IoT-Agent and visualized on a dashboard.

QSC’s IIoT Starter Kit is connected to the 1NCE IoT Flat Rate via mobile cellular networks and sends the collected information to the TeamViewer platform.

 

The necessary connectivity between the Edge Gateway of the IIoT Starter Kit and the TeamViewer endpoints is provided by the 1NCE IoT Flat Rate over secure mobile phone lines.

1. Background

Operators of industrial plants should always keep an eye of their machines to guarantee optimal workflow processes. Do devices and systems run within normal parameters? What about temperature, pressure or vibration? Are there any irregularities in the process that indicate wear and tear that might require rapid maintenance? Timely planning of maintenance windows, early procurement of spare parts and optimal adjustment of the machines ensure a smooth production process. The more accurate the collected data is, the better the company can react and also keep the product quality permanently at a high level. Many existing machines in German production lines are still not optimally networked today – the IIoT Starter Kit aims to remedy this.

2. Challenge

Retrofitting of existing systems with sensors is a popular and cost-saving way to make production lines fit for the Internet of Things. The less interference with ongoing operations, the better. For this reason, it is important to keep additional cabling or the installation of local radio networks on site and reliable data links to the cloud as simple as possible. Sensor data do not require high bandwidths and are generally predestined for the use of so-called low-power wide area networks with low energy consumption and low data bandwidth.
